Welcome to the third NZMSJ Māori Health Review.In this issue we look at how the Level 4 lockdown affected three things: gambling, harmful alcohol use, and access to unhealthy food, and nightstick twm-850xl the impact this had for Māori.The pandemic pressed pause on three of the most addictive things in our society but it also showed how we treat them as absolute essentials.Alcohol was classified as an essential service, fast food dominated the news coverage as Alert Level 4 was lifted and people puffy spa headband queued for hours outside fast food restaurants, and the community sector ground to a halt due to the loss of revenue from pokies.
We propose some lessons that could be learned from the unprecedented changes we saw in response to the threat of the global pandemic.
